County Tipperary is a scenic county situated in the south of Ireland. Tipperary was one of the first Irish counties to be established in the 13th century and is sometimes referred to as the Premier County.

The landscape is one of Tipperary's main attractions. It varies from bogs and lakes in the north of the county to mountains and rocky hills in the south. Tipperary’s landscape has abundant lush, pastureland from the large amount of rainfall.

Tipperary borders several Irish counties and is divided in two for electoral and government purposes: Tipperary North Riding and Tipperary South Riding. This division dates back to the local government act of 1898. Local government buildings in South Tipperary can be found in Clonmel and in North Tipperary can be found in Nenagh.

Tipperary is famous for its horse breeding industry and is the home of one of the largest breeding operations in the world. The County forms a large part of the Golden Vale boasting a rich and fertile agricultural landscape. The main sport of Tipperary is hurling and its teams have regularly been champions of Ireland since the 19th century. Other sports include rugby, horse and greyhound racing.

The greatest attraction in County Tipperary is the well-known Rock of Cashel (pictured above) that rises dramatically above the town of Cashel. The Rock dominates the town and the surrounding plains and is one of Ireland’s great historic sites, and was the seat of the Kings of Munster during the 5th century. The main features of the Rock are the 12th century round tower, Cormac’s Chapel and the Cathedral of St Patrick.

Lough Derg is situated in North Tipperary and is the biggest lake of the River Shannon lakes. It’s a very popular spot for boating trips, and has a wide range of fauna. Its marsh surroundings are a perfect habitat for many different species. The Galty Mountains are a well-known beauty spot situated in West Tipperary with lush valleys and rocky hills. This scenic area of Tipperary is full of mountain streams, dramatic lakes and superb sandstone peaks.
